In a landmark development, the G7 has reached a historic consensus to gradually eliminate coal usage by the early 2030s, as announced today.
The G7 nations—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US, along with representation from the EU—are currently convening in Turin, Italy. This marks the first significant gathering since COP28 in December, where global leaders committed to a shift away from reliance on fossil fuels.
In 2023, the G7 nations collectively generated 16% of their electricity from coal, a significant decrease from the 29% recorded in 2015, as per data sourced from the energy think tank, Ember.
Among the G7 members, Japan led with the highest coal share at 32% in 2023, trailed by Germany at 27%. The United States aligned closely with the G7 average of 16%, while other members had largely transitioned away from coal: France (0.4%), the UK (1.4%), Canada (5%), and Italy (5.3%).
In 2023, the G7 nations increased their gas-generated electricity to 34%, marking a rise from 29% in 2015.
